The Dangers of DIY Orthodontic Treatment

Straight teeth in just six weeks sure sounds promising, but at what cost?

A great number of patients have recently been reporting to dentists with complaints of mobile teeth, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, cracked teeth, and bone loss after using aligners that they ordered online. And that’s not all.

Some even noticed that these aligners worsened their facial profiles by leaving their teeth more crooked than before they used them.

Since no preoperative diagnostic scans and investigations are performed prior to the provision of these aligners, they can never be a perfect fit and are bound to cause problems in the future.

They are prone to trap food and debris, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria, which, in turn, can cause or worsen gum disease. The infection can even spread to your jawbone and lead to serious complications.

This is because the one-size-fits-all approach does not apply to oral appliances. When they’re not tailored and customized according to individual patient requirements, they pose an enormous threat to the health of your teeth and gums.

The estimated time period for traditional orthodontic treatment extends over 1 to 3 years. It allows your teeth to move gradually into desired positions without causing damage.

The DIY aligners attempt to rush this process of tooth movements, ultimately resulting in more harm than good since not enough time is given for the bone to expand under consistent and moderate pressure. The patient is eventually left with irreparable damage to the teeth, gums, and jawbone.

Remember, there are no shortcuts in life. Good quality orthodontic treatment requires motivation, time, and patience. On part of the dentists, it calls for hard work, skill, expertise, and proficiency to get successful treatment outcomes. Post-graduate diplomas are great for enhancing your clinical knowledge and skills.
