Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology Course

The Diploma in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology (PG Dip) is a one year part-time programme designed to provide a thorough understanding of the applied sciences and practical skills required for clinical competency in oral surgery and implant dentistry.

This course aims to deliver evidence-based teaching in the theory and practice of oral surgery and dental implantology. The programme has been designed with the busy dental practitioner in mind. Much of the theoretical content is delivered online allowing students to study from home, while practical experience is gained from experienced clinicians and educators during the residential teaching blocks in London.

Successful completion of the programme leads to the award of a Diploma in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology.

Course Details

Module 1 - The Foundations of Oral Surgery

This module will give students in depth knowledge of key evidence-based concepts underpinning oral surgery. Students will start to develop a wider range of skills in oral surgery from the beginning of the programme. Topics covered include patient assessment and consent, applied anatomy and physiology of the orofacial region, treatment planning for oral surgery, local anaesthesia, sedation and general anaesthesia, basic surgical and exodontia skills.

Module 2 - Clinical Oral Surgery

This module builds upon the previous topics and enables students to further develop their understanding of oral surgery. Concepts around flap design, surgical extractions and the management of dentoalveolar trauma and surgical complications will be introduced. Topics covered include surgical exodontia, management of unerupted teeth, principles of soft tissue surgery, management of surgical complications, diagnosis and management of dentoalveolar trauma.

Module 3 - Advanced Oral Surgery

This module teaches students about advanced oral surgical procedures and applies knowledge obtained from previous modules to more complex clinical situations. Topics covered include facial pain management, oral pathology, management of temperomandibular joint disorders, peri-radicular surgery, exposure of impacted teeth, management of the medically compromised patient.

Module 4 - The Foundations of Dental Implantology

This module introduces students to dental implants as a treatment modality and aims to provide participants with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of implantology, the requirements for effective implant treatment planning and long-term treatment success. Topics covered include patient assessment and consent, radiology, anatomy, bone biology, implant design, treatment planning and guided surgery.

Module 5 - Dental Implant Surgery

This module teaches the fundamentals of dental implant surgery. Topics covered include surgical theory, planning implant surgery, anatomy and flap design, scrubbing up and maintaining a sterile field, osteotomy preparation and implant placement protocols, bone grafting and soft tissue management, suturing and post-operative care, managing surgical complications. Students will also be advised on guided versus freehand dental implant surgery and the risks and benefits of both techniques.

Module 6 - Dental Implant Prosthetics

This module will give students a comprehensive understanding of restoring dental implants and maintaining implant restoration and covers straightforward/simple single unit cases through to managing complex cases and full arch/same day treatments. Topics covered include occlusion, restoring single and multiple posterior units, anterior and aesthetic zone restorations, digital dentistry and cad/cam technology, shade taking, laboratory techniques, removable implant supported prostheses, full arch fixed restorations, prosthetic complication, peri-implantitis and dental implant maintenance.

Entry Requirements

All prospective students must have a primary dental qualification to be eligible for enrollment (BDS/BChD/DDS degree or equivalent). As much of the course content is delivered remotely, a computer with internet connection is essential. Face-to-face content and online content is delivered in the English Language only. It is essential that prospective students are able to communicate in English.

Fees, Costs and Funding

£9,995 (UK/EU & International students)

The course fee applies to all students from the UK, EU, and International. This fee secures the student a place on the course, and covers all necessary course materials and equipment required to achieve the Diploma in Oral Surgery & Dental Implantology. Access to a dedicated online learning portal and study club is also included. Additional costs associated with residential study in London, including any necessary travel, accommodations, and food, are not included in the course fees.
