Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics Online Learning Modules

Module 1 - The Biological Basis of Orthodontics

The first module will introduce embryology, growth and development of the face and jaws. This will provide students with an understanding of the biology of tooth moments in orthodontics.

Module 2 - Principles of Orthodontic Assessment and Diagnosis

This module will provide the foundations required for accurate problem identification, case diagnosis and treatment planning, including techniques for photography, radiography and cephalometric analysis.

Module 3 - Orthodontic Appliances

Gain in depth knowledge of the appliances used in modern orthodontics, including fixed, removable, functional, clear aligners and lingual appliances. Learn to identify clinical situations and uses for each appliance, appropriate to cases in day to day clinical practice.

Module 4 - The Foundations of Orthodontic Treatment

Explore the presentation and treatment of class I, II and III malocclusions. The module will also develop understanding on vertical and horizontal issues such as open bite and asymmetries.

Module 5 - Advanced Treatment Mechanics

Build on the knowledge acquired from previous modules with teaching on advanced techniques, including TADS, biomechanics and impacted teeth. Retention, relapse and long-term stability of cases is explained.

Module 6 - Adult and Multidisciplinary Treatment

This final core module covers the common situations encountered when orthodontically treating adults. This will include TMD, periodontal concerns and management, as well as the orthodontic restorative interface.

Upgrade your experience with face to face training in London

All students have the option to attend intensive week-long face to face orthodontic courses held in London, UK.

These give a great opportunity to meet the faculty and fellow students in an open learning environment. The online teaching will be supplemented with delegates learning advanced techniques and benefiting from hands on training from both UK and international experts.

 This teaching block is designed to maximise your experience, whilst still keeping time away from practice to a minimum. Upgrading to include the residential training is optional and is not a requirement for the PG Diploma Qualification. Students may choose to complete online only training if it is their preference.

What is this course?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (PG Dip) is a 12 month part-time online training programme for both UK and International dentists.

 

The course is designed to teach orthodontics to a high level and has been built upon a solid foundation of evidence based practice and scientific research. Delivered by our team of knowledgeable and approachable specialists and lecturers, our PG Diploma course blends theoretical and practical knowledge in a range of channels to help build a rounded knowledge base and skill set for our students.

 

Throughout the programme students will learn how to achieve excellent clinical results by following current diagnostic and clinical treatment concepts, and benefit from ongoing support from experts in the field of orthodontics. We hope that the knowledge and skills built during the course will give our students confidence to provide patients with safe, predictable and controlled results in their future treatments.

How is the course delivered?

Students have 2 options for study:

 

1. 100% Online Study – the second study option is completely online, allowing student to gain their PG Diploma qualification without having to travel for training.

 

Our bespoke online orthodontic course e-learning platform has been designed to ensure students have the best and most accessible distance learning experience. All our postgraduate students will have access to hundreds of hours of online lecture content packed with detailed information from dental experts. The lectures are released sequentially and are then available throughout the course so you can refer back to them at any time you want.

 

We will delve deeper into specific topics, teach practical techniques and present treatment of complex cases during regular online live webinars. Most webinars last 1-2 hours with plenty of time for questions included. All live webinars are recorded, so no need to worry if you miss one or want to watch one again later.

 

Students will also be given access to a private discussion group where you can get to know your colleagues from around the world, discuss topics further and receive private mentoring and coaching if you require. There is no such thing as a stupid question and we actively encourage you to ask as many questions as you want, no query is too basic or too complex.

 

2. Blended Learning – combining online study with a practical face to face teaching week held in London. This approach enables our students to gain their PG Diploma qualification with minimal time away from work.

 

The face to face teaching week is optional and not a requirement for the diploma. Additional fees apply for the face to face teaching week in London.

What qualification will I be awarded?

Following successful completion of the course, students will be officially awarded the LDi Postgraduate Diploma in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (PG Dip. Ortho). This course has been accredited as Level 7 by the official awarding body EduQual Level 7. EduQual is a regulated awarding body, approved by SQA-Accreditation, a globally-recognised national qualifications regulator in the UK.

What will my qualification mean?

Students will be taught both theoretical and practical skills, in order to further their skills and confidence in the orthodontic field. Our students should be able to use their knowledge to provide a grounding for a future career in orthodontics.

 

It should be noted that this is not a specialist training programme. Students are advised to investigate the specific requirements for treating orthodontic patients within the country in which they intend to practise, as this may vary.

What are the application requirements for a South African student?

Applicants should hold a primary dental qualification (for example, BDS or equivalent). Documentation will need to be provided of this and of dental registration. Internet access is required for online learning . Students are expected to be actively working in general dental practice. Ideally, they will have attended some basic orthodontic courses and to have treated some simple orthodontic cases already to have a basic understanding of orthodontic treatments.

Will the course be taught in English?

The course is taught in English therefore both written and spoken understanding of the English language is required. It is expected that applicants are of the equivalent proficiency to IELTS Level 7 (or equivalent). This will ensure that students are able to gain the most from their experience. Will I be treating live patients?

All online orthodontic course teaching will be delivered through a variety of teaching styles including lectures, webinars, and  demonstrations of relevant techniques. Students will be encouraged to start treating patients in their own clinic/office during the course and mentoring for clinical cases will be provided by course tutors.

Do I need to travel to the UK?

All Postgraduate Diploma students have the option to attend one week-long face to face orthodontic conference/teaching block in London. Travel to London is optional and is not a requirement for the Diploma course. Additional fees apply for the orthodontic conference.
