Assessment

Assessment consists of three written examinations, each combining multiple-choice and short-answer questions to evaluate your understanding of the theoretical content covered. You’ll also complete a final written case presentation, with a clinical case provided if required.

Qualification

Dentists who successfully complete the programme are awarded the Diploma in Dental Implantology and Oral Surgery, accredited at Level 7 by EduQual.

Surgical Patient Assessment: Master comprehensive patient assessment, including clinical examinations, medical history review, and risk stratification. Learn to implement appropriate imaging protocols, assess bleeding and anaesthesia risks, and ensure psychological preparedness. Additionally, gain critical pharmacological knowledge to make informed prescribing decisions, manage pain and infection, and understand antibiotic prophylaxis and drug interactions, all while adhering to evidence-based practices.

Implant and Surgical Anatomy: Refresh essential knowledge of oral and maxillofacial anatomy, covering skeletal, neurovascular, and soft tissue structures critical for implant placement and oral surgery. This module emphasises the identification of anatomical risk factors and the interpretation of radiographic images to ensure precise and safe surgical planning.

CBCT and Radiology: Learn the principles of CBCT imaging and radiological diagnosis. This module will teach you how to plan, perform and interpret radiographic examinations, helping you make informed surgical decisions and enhance diagnostic accuracy.

Essential Surgical Skills: Develop proficiency in the fundamental skills required in oral surgical procedures including asepsis, surgical gowning, anaesthesia administration, and atraumatic extraction techniques. You’ll also master ridge preservation, flap design, and suturing techniques, ensuring optimal healing and patient outcomes. Practical guidelines for post-operative care and management of complications are also covered.

Clinical Research: Enhance your ability to critically evaluate and apply research findings in your clinical practice, buiLDIng on research methodologies introduced in earlier units. This module reinforces the importance of evidence-based decision-making in surgical and implant dentistry.

We also run monthly Live Study Clubs, giving you the opportunity to put questions to your lecturers, explore complex clinical topics, and learn alongside your peers. All sessions are recorded and available on the VLE for those who can’t attend live.

What about practical implant and surgical training?

Every student receives a Clinical Simulation Kit containing the models and equipment needed to complete the hands-on training exercises built into the course. Supported by surgical video demonstrations and guided case scenarios, you’ll develop the practical implant and surgical skills needed to progress into treating patients.

Can I also attend in-person sessions?

Yes. Students may choose to attend a range of hands-on workshops throughout the year, covering topics across the full implant and oral surgery curriculum. Workshops are delivered by our expert faculty and partner organisations, offering practical training on models, animal heads, and cadavers, as well as mentored live patient cases.

Attendance at in-person events is optional and not required to complete the Diploma in Dental Implantology & Oral Surgery. In-person events are priced separately from your course fee.

What qualification will I be awarded on completion?
