Every time we open enrolments for a new intake, we receive a wave of thoughtful questions from dentists considering whether postgraduate study is the right step for them. If you’ve been thinking about joining one of our online Diploma programmes, this guide is for you.

Whether you’re curious about clinical teaching, accreditation, tutor support or career outcomes, we’ve gathered and answered the most frequently asked questions from prospective students, all in one place.
What postgraduate diplomas do you offer?
We currently offer three postgraduate programmes:
- Diploma in Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics
- Diploma in Dental Implantology & Oral Surgery
- Diploma in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry
All are fully online, academically accredited at Level 7, and designed for practising dentists.
Advance your career by studying for a world-leading postgraduate diploma
Study at the cutting-edge of dental research with curricula taught by global experts and an online schedule that suits you.
Can I study at the London Dental Institute while working full-time in practice?
Yes. Each course has been designed with busy clinicians in mind. You’ll be able to study around your work schedule without needing to take time away from your patients.
How much time will I need to dedicate each week?
Most students dedicate around 4–6 hours per week to their studies. This can vary depending on the module or assessment period, and the flexibility of the VLE means you can adjust your pace as needed.
Are there fixed lecture times or can I study at my own pace?
We use a blended model. Live Study Clubs are scheduled in advance and recorded, while core lectures and materials are pre-recorded and available on demand — allowing you to study when it suits you best.
What’s the difference between a PG Dip. and a Master’s degree?
Both are Level 7 qualifications, but a Postgraduate Diploma does not require a dissertation and is typically shorter in duration. It’s ideal for dentists who want advanced clinical training without the additional time and research commitment of a Master’s.
How does assessment work in an online course?
Assessment is ongoing and includes clinical case submissions, short written assignments, multiple-choice quizzes, and active participation in discussions and webinars.
Do I need to find my own patients for clinical cases?
Yes. You’ll treat patients in your own practice and submit your clinical documentation to the Clinical Case Forum for tutor feedback and peer learning.
How can I learn practical skills online?
Your clinical work is completed in your own practice. You’ll apply your learning in real time, uploading case records and receiving feedback from our faculty within the Clinical Case Forum.
What is the Clinical Case Forum?
The Clinical Case Forum is the central hub for practical learning. You’ll upload case notes, radiographs, photos and treatment plans, and receive personalised feedback from tutors. You can also learn by reviewing cases submitted by other students.
Can I take more than one diploma at once?
We recommend starting with one course at a time, as each programme is rigorous and clinically demanding. It’s important to give yourself the space to fully engage with the material.
Is there tutor support available if I get stuck?
Yes, and lots of it. Tutors are active in the forum, host live sessions, and respond to questions throughout each module. You’ll also have access to academic support throughout your course.
What if I fall behind during the course?
We know life can be unpredictable. If you fall behind, our team will work with you to help you catch up. The course is designed to be flexible and supportive.
Can I study at the London Dental Institute if I qualified outside the UK?
Absolutely! As long as you hold a recognised primary dental qualification and can speak English to professional proficiency, you are welcome to apply. Our student body is globally diverse.
What qualifications will I receive at the end of the course?
You’ll be awarded a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in your chosen discipline upon successful completion. That’s the equivalent of a master’s level qualification.
What kind of support do students receive throughout the course?
Support includes:
- Academic feedback from tutors
- Live webinars and Q&A sessions
- A dedicated support team for tech or admin queries
- Access to a community of fellow students and alumni
What happens if I need to pause the course?
If you encounter unexpected circumstances, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. That might mean giving you extensions on your assessments or allowing you to rejoin the course at a later date as part of another cohort. Each case is handled individually, just get in touch with our support team.
Are there any in-person exams or compulsory events at the LDi?
No — the course is fully online. All lectures, assessments, and submissions are completed through our digital platform. We do hold a conference each year, but attendance to lve events is 100% optional.
What equipment do I need to take part in the course?
You’ll need:
- A laptop or desktop computer
- A smartphone with a good-quality camera (for patient photography and documentation)
- A stable internet connection
When do applications close for the next intake?
Our next intake is in September, and applications are now open. Places are limited and often fill early — we recommend applying as soon as you’re ready.
How do I know if I’m ready for postgraduate study?
If you’re a practising dentist and eager to grow your clinical skills, you’re likely more ready than you think. Our fundamentals module helps bridge any academic gaps so you can start with confidence.
