You’ll Never Walk Alone: What Liverpool FC Can Teach Us About Dental Education

Copy of Clinical Guides PDF Download (74)

Our founder, Dr. James Mackenzie, will be the first to admit he’s a football fan.

There’s something special, he says, about unwinding on a Saturday afternoon, watching the match. Recently, while watching Liverpool play Aston Villa, he found himself caught up in one of football’s most iconic moments: the stadium singing You’ll Never Walk Alone.

It’s a song that resonates far beyond sport – the idea that you always have support, a team behind you, and someone playing on your side. What could this look like in our dental education?

What It’s Like to Walk Alone

We’ve all experienced those moments of frustration when learning something new.

You’re watching a lecture or reading through a case study, and a concept just doesn’t quite click. You pause, rewind, reread… But something isn’t slotting into place.

If you’re learning online as part of a course, it’s probably at this point that you’ll fire off an email asking for clarification, and then wait, hoping for a response that clears everything up. But when an answer comes, it’s often brief or arrives just a little too late to be useful.

For many dentists pursuing postgraduate education, that scenario feels all too familiar. But that’s not a reflection of anyone’s effort or ability, simply the reality of learning complex material in a fast-paced professional world. Dentistry demands precision, understanding, and confidence, and that can make the learning process feel quite personal. When you don’t have the opportunity to talk things through with someone who understands your perspective, the isolation can start to weigh on you.

Plus, online learning brings flexibility, but it can also create distance.

Without that informal conversation after a lecture, or the chance to stop a tutor in the corridor to ask a quick question, you can end up feeling detached, as if you’re working in your own small bubble rather than as part of a learning community.

How the London Dental Institute Was Built Differently

When James and his co-founder, Dr. John Fagbemi, founded the London Dental Institute, they had personal experience of those issues and were determined to build something different.

They wanted to create a place where dentists could gain postgraduate qualifications without losing the sense of connection and mentorship that makes learning enjoyable and rewarding.

Their philosophy was simple: every student should feel supported, seen, and valued. Whether you’re brushing up on restorative principles or exploring complex surgical planning, you’ll always have someone to reach out to.

What Support Looks Like in Practice

That philosophy comes to life through the support structures built into every LDi programme.

1:1 Case Support gives students the chance to discuss real patient cases directly with their mentors. It’s a safe space to ask questions, explore treatment options, and gain the kind of personalised feedback that builds clinical confidence.

Extra Lessons offer the flexibility to revisit key concepts or topics that didn’t click the first time. These focused refreshers help dentists learn at their own pace and strengthen understanding before applying it in practice.

And of course, the Live Study Clubs are a cornerstone of the LDi experience. Interactive sessions where students connect with expert speakers and peers, discuss cases in real time, and see how others approach similar challenges.

Support at the Heart of the LDi Experience

At the LDi, we know that it’s this culture of support that allows dentists to build confidence, grow their skills, and enjoy the process along the way.

So if a topic ever feels challenging, the message is simple: just like in the song, you’ll never walk alone.
