As the summer continues, we’ve been taking the relaxed holiday season to catch up on motivational reading.

This month, I’ve been reading Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In the book, Covey introduces the Pygmalion Effect, a psychological phenomenon in which high expectations lead to improved results and vice versa.

As a result, I’ve been considering this effect in application to our studies.

When we set ourselves a difficult goal, the success of this goal often depends on our attitudes towards it. If we believe we can, we will.

As scientists, a motivational statement like this can evoke mixed responses. But in many ways, our attitude does indeed set us apart. We’re already esteemed clinicians, and we’ve earned our credentials through hard work and serious study, yet our achievements are also dependent on a mindset, too.

We believed we could, so we did.

The summer months are a time to rest and recharge. But they’re also a time to take stock of our professional development, and evaluating our attitude is a great first step.

With that said, let’s get stuck into our monthly roundup at the London Dental Institute.

Module Spotlight: Clinical Photography

Once again, this month, all students unlock new modules as they progress toward their Diplomas. This month, we’re spotlighting a shared module, Clinical Photography.

Taking accurate patient photos is a mainstay of orthodontic and aesthetic treatments. Yet, clinicians are often left to hone this skill on the job, meaning failed patient communication, limited diagnostic abilities, and sub-standard patient record-keeping.

As a result, both the Diploma in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the Diploma in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry have modules that focus on the specific skill of taking excellent dental photographs.

Taught by expert photographer Tim Zoltie, the Head of Medical and Dental Illustration at The University of Leeds Teaching Hospitals, the course dives into everything you need to know about taking expert dental photographs, including camera settings for anterior and lateral views, distance-to-subject ratios, and the use of intra-oral mirrors — and that’s just in the first webinar!

We’ve been exploring this topic of dental photography in our latest blog post. Read more about its importance and its application below.

Introducing Clean & Seal

Finally, this month on our Instagram, we highlighted a breakthrough in periodontal treatment by Dr. Alexander Müller-Busch.

Take a look at the case here:

Dr. Alexander explains, “Clinically and radiologically, there is a pronounced periodontal defect. The initial clinical picture with 7 mm probing depth and positive bleeding index on tooth 12 and X-ray examination shows severe bone loss.

A new type of procedure, known as “Clean & Seal,” makes it possible to improve the therapeutic results of nonsurgical periodontal treatment significantly.
